Abstract

English grammar, a phrase is a group of words that work
together as a unit within a sentence but do not contain both a
subject and a verb. Phrases add detail, clarity, and richness to
sentences, functioning as building blocks that enhance the
meaning of your writing and speaking (Greenbaum & Quirk,
1990). Unlike clauses, phrases cannot stand alone as complete
sentences. They often serve specific grammatical roles, such as
acting as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or preposition
(Huddleston & Pullum, 2002).
By the end of this chapter, you will be equipped with the
skills to recognize, use, and manipulate phrases effectively in
your writing and speaking, setting a solid foundation for
mastering English grammar. Understanding phrases is crucial
because they are fundamental to constructing sentences that are
both clear and expressive.
