Abstract

Semantics is the field of linguistics that studies the meaning of
language. When people talk or write, they not only follow grammar
rules but also convey meaning.
These statements have very identical grammatical structures, yet
their meanings and communicative roles are clearly distinct. The first
statement establishes a fact, the second denies it, and the third poses
a question. Semantics helps to explain how language users produce
and understand such changes in meaning, even when the
grammatical forms are closely related.
For English language learners, semantics is both theoretical and
highly practical. In language classes, pupils may generate
grammatically accurate statements yet misunderstand the meaning.
For example, a learner may accurately create the statement “She
used to live in Jakarta” but interpret it as implying she still lives
there. Semantically, the expression refers to a previous state or
behavior that is no longer valid in the present. Understanding
semantics enables future teachers to identify this type of
misunderstanding and more clearly explain the intended meaning to
students.
